  • Signal resolution: RetroScaler2x accepts 240p/480i/288p/576i NTSC/PAL sources and converts to 480p/576p HDMI output (480p for NTSC, 576p for PAL). For example, 240p signals are properly supported, allowing full progressive doubling to 480p. The 480i signal is deinterlaced and doubled to 480p. Keep in mind that the output resolution of this device only tops out at 480p/576p.
  • Audio performance: The RetroScaler2X's audio performance is decent, although we have to say it's perfect. In general use, there is no problem with audio digitization, but on bra sounds (such as explosions) the output may sound grainier than through the OSSC. You might not even notice this on your TV speakers, but you might if you have an external amplifier or home theater system. Of course, in this case it's usually easy to route the audio around the RetroScaler2X.
  • Regional compatibility: Both NTSC and PAL signals are supported, but they cannot be converted to each other. This means you can plug in any signal that the target device is compatible with, but NTSC may not work on a PAL HDMI device, and vice versa. RetroScaler2X does not support all PAL-MConsoles in Brazil.
  • Filter mode: "FIL" mode is purely based on preference, but generally retro gamers prefer to have FIL mode off in 2D games (SNES, Genesis, etc.) and on in 3D games (N64, Saturn, etc.). Additionally, FIL mode may help reduce flicker in some 480i games.
  • The Pass-through: By placing the RetroScaler2X in pass-through mode, incoming composite, S-Video or component signals are simply transparently digitized into HDMI. Support for 240p is rare in the HDMI world, but by adding a simple HDMI to VGA converter you can convert the signal back to the analog domain again. This makes the unit the perfect transcoder for use with 15 kHz displays such as PVM (and of course OSSC).
